Six
ways to fire-up your sales – and your profits
Looking
for new ways to spread the word about your books? Start with this short
list of idea-sparkers!
1.
Develop a book series or collection
Instead of selling just one book, why not sell a series! This involves
rethinking--to a certain degree--your publishing philosophy and strategy,
but it is an effective promotional tool. Like the popular book and music
clubs that target consumers, you sell a pool of information one installment
at a time. Your difference is your market niche.
2.
Always include a reply device in your books
Your current readers are your best prospects! Make it easy for them
to order another book, by including an order form or a survey card.
Tailor the reply cards to the book(s) purchased. For example, a book
on W.W. II aircraft should include a list of all the books you publish
about aviation.
3.
Use seminars to promote new books
A seminar is a good place to build interest in a soon-to-be-released
publication. Early orders can be taken. Meet the author sessions could
be arranged. The book could be promoted as essential reading for your
next seminar.
4.
Publish books that need regular updates
Help your readers stay on top of changes in your field -- and earn their
repeat business in the process!
5. Test
a chap book
Try a promotion that includes a small but particularly strong section--a
chap book--of the book you want to sell. It's a firsthand look at the
actual writing. Plus, it increases the longevity of the promotion: The
reader can keep it. Put an order card in it.
6. Include
catalogues and publication listings with all of your books
Since your current customers are your best prospects, why not make it
easy for them to order another book? With every book purchased include
a complete catalogue of your books, or at least a flyer featuring new
titles.
