Nine
electrifying suggestions for recruiting new members
Want
to put more spark into your membership drives? Try revising your brochure.
On this page, find out why, along with other great ideas for signing
up more members.
1.
Promote
membership and your conference together
Attending a conference is a terrific way to start a membership! Launch
an aggressive joint campaign, using motivational pieces designed specifically
for prospects. Let them sign up for the conference at the discounted
member rate, or offer an attractive package price.
2. Put information for potential members on the Internet
On your website, promote your association to visitors who may be interested
in joining. Provide a welcoming message, a comprehensive overview of
the benefits of your organization, a way to request more information--an
e-mail screen, or a toll-free phone number--and an attractive on-line
registration offer.
3. Print a new brochure every year
Brochures and other sales materials lose their impact over time. Their
ideas aren't as current as they could be, or prospects toss them because
they've seen them before. A brand new piece, or even a new cover might
do the trick. At least change the color every year.
4. Use testimonials in your recruiting materials
If you can customize your materials for specific areas (a personalized
letter, for example), use testimonials from members in that region.
If those members are agreeable, list phone numbers where prospects can
call them to get the scoop on your association.
5. Pick up the phone
If you haven't heard from prospects within two weeks after you send
out materials, call them. A follow-up phone call is one of the most
effective ways to turn an "undecided" into a "joiner"!
6. Make them an offer they can't refuse
7. Try some different mailing lists for potential
members
Expand the range of your mailings with lists that target prospects from
several angles. Click here for 8 blindingly insightful examples.
8. Have current members recruit new ones
Send members a brochure and application to give a colleague. Or have
members invite prospects to a meeting or association social event. Make
it fun for members--offer an attractive incentive. Like what? Click
here to be enlightened.
9. Send a "we want you back" mailing
Former members are about as close to your target audience as they come.
Include a cover letter--with a reminder of the great benefits they had
as members, and highlighting the improvements in benefits and services
that members now enjoy--and a brochure describing all the features of
membership in detail.
